Why Your Collagen Supplement Is Failing (And How to Fix It)
How it works, how to trigger it, and the protocol to use.
If you take a look at Collagen supplement marketing, you would believe: just scoop a tablespoon into your morning coffee, sit back, and wait for the plump skin, supple joints, and age-defying glow.
Except biology doesn’t work like that.
Simply swallowing collagen peptides doesn't mean your body will actually use them. It’s not that simple, and to understand it - let’s first take a look at what collagen even is.
What is collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, accounting for roughly 30% of its total protein. It provides structure to skin, bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and other connective tissues. In skin, collagen represents approximately 70% to 80% of the tissue’s dry weight.
Its strength comes from its structure.
Three chains of amino acids twist together into a triple helix. These helices assemble into larger fibers that give tissues tensile strength—the ability to resist being stretched or pulled apart.
Scientists have identified numerous collagen types, but three account for most of the collagen in the body:
Type I: Skin, bone, tendons, and ligaments
Type II: Cartilage and other joint structures
Type III: Skin, blood vessels, and internal organs
Starting in your mid-20s, your natural production of collagen drops by roughly 1% per year. Sun exposure, smoking, and high blood sugar aggressively accelerate this breakdown.
What happens when you ingest collagen?
Marketing will have you believe that it works like this:
You drink collagen → Your body deposits that collagen into your skin and joints.
In reality, your digestive system treats them just like any other protein. Your digestive system breaks collagen down into individual amino acids. Most enter the body’s circulating amino-acid pool, where they can be used wherever they are needed. In your bloodstream, your body has no idea that those amino acids came from a collagen tub.
Now you’re in a position where your body has all the building blocks for collagen and it needs to remake it, but something needs to signal your body to remake the collagen Or else your body will use those amino acids just like it would use any other protein, wherever it is needed.
So once you’ve taken that collagen:
A) Your body has the building blocks needed to make collagen
B) Your body has no idea that you want to make collagen
So .. how do the collagen supplements work?
There are two ways in which they will help your body:
All the essential building blocks to build collagen are present - so when your body wants to make it, it’s easier and faster.
When high concentrations of collagen peptides enter your bloodstream - they may act like a signal to fibroblasts (the cells that make collagen and other parts of connective tissue). The high concentration of peptides makes your fibroblasts assume your body's existing collagen is rapidly breaking down due to injury, so they make more to fix it. This mechanism is still being debated by scientists - we don’t really know how it works yet.
So, Does Collagen Work?
Sometimes. And usually more modestly than the marketing suggests.
The answer depends heavily on what you are taking it for.
For Skin: The Evidence Is Promising but Imperfect
Multiple randomized trials and meta-analyses (1) have found that hydrolyzed collagen may produce modest improvements in skin hydration and elasticity. Many studies have used approximately 2.5 to 10 grams per day for 8 to 24 weeks.
But there is an important caveat.
A more recent meta-analysis (3) found apparent improvements when all trials were combined, but the effect disappeared when researchers separately analyzed studies without pharmaceutical-industry funding. It looks like the size and reliability of the benefits seem to be in lower quality studies funded by pharmaceutical companies.
So all I can say is:
Collagen may modestly improve skin hydration and elasticity after consistent use, but it will not reverse skin aging or compensate for years of unprotected UV exposure.
For Joints: Benefits May Require Months
Clinical research suggests that collagen peptides may reduce discomfort or improve function in some people with activity-related joint symptoms.
In (4) one trial involving active middle-aged adults, 10 to 20 grams per day for six to nine months improved several measures of pain, function, and daily activity. Results vary across studies, however, and collagen is not a substitute for diagnosing or treating the cause of persistent joint pain.
For Tendons and Ligaments:
Connective tissue remodels in response to mechanical stress.
In this study(5) vitamin-C-enriched gelatin (also contains collagen) one hour before short bouts of exercise. The 15-gram dose produced the greatest increase in a blood marker associated with collagen synthesis.
This other study (6) found that consuming 15 or 30 grams of hydrolyzed collagen before resistance exercise can increase acute markers of collagen synthesis, with 30 grams sometimes producing a larger response. While this one found that taking 15 grams twice daily during a week of intense resistance training did not further increase muscle connective-tissue protein synthesis compared with a placebo.
So in conclusion- for your tendons and ligaments to get some of that collagen, you will have to combine the collagen with vitamin C and resistance training.
The Five Conditions Collagen Needs
1. You Need Enough Complete Protein
Collagen contains calories and contributes amino acids. But nutritionally, it is not equivalent to whey, dairy, soy, eggs, meat, or another complete protein.
Collagen contains no tryptophan and relatively little leucine and other essential amino acids. It is therefore classified as an incomplete protein and is not particularly effective at stimulating muscle-protein synthesis.
That means collagen should supplement your primary protein sources, and you cannot replace that with collagen.
2. You Need Adequate Vitamin C
Vitamin C is required by enzymes that stabilize newly formed collagen. To make sure you get enough Vitamin C - you can add more vitamin C rich foods to your diet:
Citrus fruit, kiwi, berries, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, and many other fruits and vegetables can supply it. Megadoses or vitamin C supplements are unnecessary for most people.
3. You need to move
Collagen supplements may provide raw materials, but they cannot replace the physical signal created by resistance training, rehabilitation exercises, walking, jumping, or another appropriate loading program - that tell your body to make more collagen.
A little note of caution: More load is not always better. Aim for gradual, tolerable loading that gives the tissue a reason to adapt without overwhelming it.
For healthier tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone - for the maximum impact, you will have to time your collagen with your exercise.
Take 10-15g of collagen 30 to 60 minutes before you exercise.
4. You Need Enough Time
Collagen is not a stimulant. You will not feel it switch on, your skin will (sadly) not start to glow as soon as you take it.
Skin studies commonly run for at least 8 to 12 weeks. Studies measuring joint symptoms often continue for three to nine months. Tendon remodeling can take even longer.
Just know that going in, that it will take months of consistent use before you notice any changes.
5. You Need to Protect the Collagen You Already Have
UV exposure, smoking, chronic hyperglycemia etc can also damage collagen-rich tissues or make collagen fibers stiffer and less functional. For skin, daily sun protection may preserve more collagen than any powder can replace.
For your connective tissue and bones - consistent exercise is the most effective way to preserve and keep your body making collagen.
What You Do Not Need
You do not need to:
Take collagen and vitamin C in the same mouthful. Or buy a supplement that contains both.
Buy a product containing every collagen “type.”
Add large doses of vitamin C, zinc, copper, or vitamin A without evidence of deficiency.
Time collagen before exercise when your only goal is skin hydration.
Assume that doubling the dose will double the result.
Replace physical therapy or medical treatment with a supplement.
After all this, if you are still with me and wanting to take collagen, here is my handy guide on what I would buy:
1. Look for hydrolyzed collagen peptides
The ingredient list should say something like:
Hydrolyzed collagen peptides
Hydrolyzed bovine collagen
Hydrolyzed marine collagen
“Hydrolyzed” means the collagen has been broken into smaller peptides that dissolve easily and can be digested and absorbed.
For an ordinary collagen powder, you do not need to pay more because the label advertises five or ten collagen types. The original collagen source affects the peptide profile, but there is no strong evidence that a “multi-collagen” product automatically works better.
Exception: Undenatured Type II collagen is a different joint supplement, usually taken at approximately 40 milligrams rather than several grams. Do not confuse it with hydrolyzed collagen peptides. it appears on bottles as UC-11
Check the actual collagen dose
Do not judge the product by scoop size or grams of “protein.” Look for the amount of collagen peptides per serving.
For general use, choose a powder providing at least 10 grams per practical serving.
Typical research doses:
Skin: approximately 2.5–10 grams daily for 8–24 weeks
Joints and connective tissue: commonly 10–15 grams daily
Around rehabilitation or resistance exercise: approximately 15 grams taken 30–60 minutes beforehand
Some exercise studies have tested 30 grams, but it has not been established that everyone needs that much or that it produces better long-term results.
Powders are usually more practical than capsules or gummies. Gummies often contain relatively little collagen and more added ingredients.
Choose a simple ingredient list
For an unflavored product, the ideal ingredient list is:
Hydrolyzed collagen peptides
Just the one ingredient.
Vitamin C is acceptable, but you do not need it added to the product if your diet already contains adequate vitamin C. Flavorings, sweeteners, probiotics, biotin, hyaluronic acid and herbal blends are optional - not evidence that the collagen itself is better.
Avoid paying a premium for:
“Beauty blend” language
Ten different collagen types
Added vitamins you do not need
Proprietary blends that hide the collagen dose
Claims that the collagen travels directly to your skin or joints
Look for credible independent testing
“Third-party tested” on its own is vague. Ideally, the company should name the laboratory or certification program and make the finished product searchable in that organization’s database.
Useful certifications include:
NSF Certified for Sport
NSF/ANSI 173
USP Verified
Informed Sport or Informed Choice
NSF dietary-supplement certification can verify label claims and test for certain contaminants. NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Sport provide additional screening for substances prohibited in competitive sports.
For a basic collagen powder, banned-substance testing is most important for competitive athletes. Everyone should still prioritize testing for identity, potency, microorganisms and contaminants such as heavy metals.
A transparent company should be able to provide a recent, batch-specific certificate of analysis. Some companies will publish them.
Choose the source based on diet and allergies
Bovine collagen
Usually the least expensive
Commonly marketed as Types I and III
Appropriate for most skin, tendon and general connective-tissue uses
Marine collagen
Usually derived from fish skin or scales
Commonly Type I
Often more expensive
Appropriate for people who avoid beef, but not for people with fish allergies
Chicken collagen
Often associated with Type II collagen
More common in joint-focused products
No source has been conclusively shown to be universally superior. Choose based on allergies, dietary restrictions, sourcing preferences, taste and cost.
“Grass-fed,” “pasture-raised,” “wild-caught” and “non-GMO” may reflect sourcing preferences, but they do not prove that the product will stimulate more collagen production.
A Note About UC-II® Collagen
UC-II® is different from hydrolyzed collagen peptides. UC-II® is mainly used for joint discomfort - especially knee pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
It has been studied in:
People with knee osteoarthritis
Healthy adults who experience joint discomfort during or after exercise
People wanting to improve knee flexibility and range of motion
Regular collagen powders are broken into small peptides and taken in gram-sized doses to provide amino acids and potentially support connective-tissue remodeling.
UC-II® is a branded form of undenatured Type II collagen derived from chicken cartilage. Its original protein structure is preserved, and it is taken in a much smaller dose - typically 40 milligrams of the UC-II® ingredient daily, often providing approximately 10 milligrams of total collagen. It is thought to work by influencing the immune response to Type II collagen in joint cartilage. The evidence is promising, but the research base is still relatively small and several studies are connected to the ingredient manufacturer.
What to look for
Choose a product that lists:
UC-II® undenatured Type II collagen
40 milligrams of UC-II® per daily serving
The UC-II® trademark, rather than vague wording such as “Type II collagen”
Credible finished-product testing
Do not assume that every product labeled “undenatured Type II collagen” is equivalent. Laboratory testing has found meaningful differences in structure and antigenic activity among products.
UC-II® is derived from chicken, so it is not vegetarian and may be unsuitable for someone with a chicken allergy.
Which should you choose?
For skin or general connective-tissue support: hydrolyzed collagen peptides
For tendons or ligaments alongside exercise: hydrolyzed collagen peptides
For joint discomfort or knee osteoarthritis: UC-II® may be worth considering
For both goals: the products can be used together because they have different doses and proposed mechanisms
So at the end of the day:
Should you or should you not take a collagen supplement?
Collagen peptides are not a passive, plug-and-play cure for aging.
If you want your collagen to work, stop drinking it like a standard protein shake. Pair it with Vitamin C, time it around movement, hit your daily nutrition targets, and give your body a reason to build it.

Very helpful information. Puts my expectations in perspective. I put hydrolyzed marine collagen in my daily shake. I don’t know if it’s making any difference but I figured it couldn’t hurt.
